I am a huge fan of non-fiction writing, and especially place-based writing. Growing up in a rural area, I remember in high school some of my peers couldn't wait to get out of that place, couldn't wait to move on to something important. I never felt like that. The idea of roots was important to me. My family had roots in the area; I've heard generations of stories. I want my students to understand that their rural heritage is something to be proud of and something to share. I hope that through this process, if they didn't already, they will understand the value of rural life.
